Information about harmful solar radiation inferred from ‘housekeeping data’ could help protect future craft

The European Space Agency has said it is studying the damage inflicted by the sun on spacecraft so it can better protect them in future.

The sun emits solar energetic particles, which Esa described as “atomic ‘hailstones’ sped up to unimaginably fast speeds…mostly protons but also larger particles like helium nuclei”.
