Commission consults on state aid

The European Commission is looking for opinions on a revised version of the General Block Exemption Regulation, which governs financial aid from governments to businesses.

The GBER defines exceptions to rules that require national governments to notify the EU when they give financial aid to industry. The revised draft regulation increases the portion of state aid that can be granted without the need to notify the Commission.

The revised regulation includes new categories of exempted aid, including innovation aid for large companies, and simplifies the assessment. This should reduce the administrative burden for member states and local public authorities, the Commission said in a 18 December statement.
