Countries ill-prepared for regional funds

Member states do not yet have the structures in place to spend regional development funds, which will be allocated towards research and innovation from 2014, a report has found.

The study, undertaken for the European Parliament’s regional development committee, finds that preparation for the 2014-20 period is “far behind schedule in almost all member states”, with many countries not yet having in place the contract that will be needed to access the funds.

While the report does not draw conclusions on the implications of this, it is likely that this could delay the spending of cohesion funds, including the European Regional Development Fund, which will be allocated for research and innovation.
