An expanded European emergency response centre has been inaugurated in Brussels.
The centre was inaugurated on 15 May during the European Civil Protection Forum. It replaces the Monitoring and Information Centre, which was deemed insufficient to deal with the number of emergency operations it had to deal with.
The new centre makes use of systems for monitoring floods, fires, tsunamis and other events, that are operated by the Joint Research Council, the European Commission’s science service. It also uses of the Copernicus Emergency Mapping Service, which is also coordinated by the JRC.
