ESA inaugurates asteroid centre

The European Space Agency has opened a centre for monitoring near-Earth objects, such as asteroids and comets, at its centre for Earth observation (Esrin) in Frascati, Italy.

The centre is to act as a central coordination point for accessing European data on near-Earth objects, which are part of ESA’s Space Situational Awareness programme. Another centre, on space weather coordination, was opened in Brussels as part of the SSA programme in April.

The inauguration took place on 22 May. The centre was opened by Thomas Reiter, ESA’s director of human spaceflight; Augusto Cramarossa, Italian delegate to the ESA council; and Claudio Portelli, Italian delegate to the SSA programme.
