Commission launches agency to support SMEs

The European Commission has established the Executive Agency for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises.

In a 23 December statement, the Commission said that from 1 January, the agency will manage most parts of the COSME programme on the competitiveness of SMEs. It will also be in charge of the SME instrument, which was launched under the Horizon 2020 programme, to support smaller firms.

In addition, it will manage the energy and climate societal challenges within Horizon 2020 and the Programme for Environment and Climate action. Later in 2014, the EASME will become responsible for parts of the European Maritime Fisheries Fund.
