The Council of Ministers wants countries to channel more funds into sports-based research in order to boost the impact of this field on the economy.
In a Council meeting held on 25 November, the ministers said that sport has potential to create jobs, but pointed out that this would only happen if more research is being done in this field.
To that end, ministers said that EU programmes such as Horizon 2020 and the enterprise fund Cosme should support sports research that contributes to the development of innovative products. According to the Council, sport as an economic sector is very profitable and a small amount of spending can yield significant results in terms of economic growth.
