The European chemical industry spent about €2 billion more a year on R&D between 2006 and 2012 than the United States or Japan, data from lobby group Cefic have shown.
The figures, published on 24 February by industry representatives, look at spending by chemistry firms across the globe over the past 20 years.
They show that, in absolute terms, R&D spending in the EU chemical industry was valued at an average of €8.3bn each year between 2006 and 2012. This compares to an average of €6.6bn in the US and €6bn in Japan over the same time.
