Innovation and research should be priorities for members of the next European Parliament when they discuss competitiveness, according to lobby group Business Europe.
A report released by the group on 11 March, titled Picture a Global Europe: The business community’s vision for the EU, urged the European Parliament to step up efforts to ensure that spending on R&D reaches 3 per cent of GDP across Europe.
Europe in general must boost "data-driven innovation" in its manufacturing and services industries, such as the use of cloud computing and data analytics, the report says. If this fails, the continent risks falling further behind countries like the United States, Japan and China, it warns.
