Regional policy commissioner Johannes Hahn has heard evidence from three regions on how smart specialisation can boost local innovation through structural funds.
Hahn invited representatives from Catalonia in Spain, Skåne in Sweden and l’Aquitaine in France to hear evidence on their application of smart specialisation. The concept of smart specialisation was introduced under the 2014-2020 multiannual financial framework to streamline the spending of structural funds towards regional competitiveness.
Catalonia’s smart specialisation strategy focused on improving cooperation between universities and companies through an innovation strategy. This cooperation helped to create products from public innovation, and improved regional exports, the Catalonian representative said.
