One hundred candidates shortlisted for Mars colony

One hundred applicants have been shortlisted to become the first colonists of the Red Planet aboard the Mars One mission.

The project, planned by the Dutch-based company Mars One, intends to establish a permanent human settlement on Mars by 2025. In January 2014, the company opened an application process to select the first inhabitants of the colony and more than 202,000 applications were submitted.

In a statement issued on 16 February, the company announced that 50 male and 50 female candidates have been selected after online interviews with the chief medical officer for the mission, Norbert Kraft, during which they were told about the risks involved.
