The European Commission has revealed its strategy for the implementation of 5G, the fifth generation of wireless networks, with the aim of starting commercialisation after 2020.
Speaking at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona on 3 March, Günther Oettinger, the EU commissioner for jobs and growth, presented the EU’s vision for the implementation of 5G. The strategy is the result of 18 months of discussion between the Commission and the private companies involved in the 5G Public-Private Partnership, launched in December 2013.
The 5G infrastructure, the Commission said, should be “sustainable and scalable” and should improve citizen’s connectivity to the Internet even from densely populated areas or when travelling underground.
