Policymakers should stop forcing academic researchers to engage in entrepreneurship, and instead create ‘innovation hubs’ where support from businesspeople can be provided to those academics who want it, a report has recommended.
The report, released on 24 February, was prepared by the Scientific Committee for Engineering and Technical Sciences at Science Europe, the group representing national research agencies in the EU.
It voices concerns over what it describes as growing political pressure being put on all academic researchers to become entrepreneurs. Very often, this pressure is translated into “flawed innovation, built on knowledge of little value”, the report claims.
