Industry set to make energy efficiency gains

Efforts to improve energy efficiency in European industries are likely to enjoy increasing success up to 2050, according to a report for the European Commission.

The study, conducted by policy consulting firm ICF International and published on 25 January, examined the development of energy efficiency in eight energy intensive industries. Together, they accounted for 25 per cent of total EU energy consumption and around 98 per cent of industrial energy use in 2013.

The study states that, by 2050, only iron and steel and the chemicals sectors are expected to show increasing energy consumption. For the other industries, falling energy consumption is predicted as a result of either declining production or improvements in energy efficiency.
