The International Maritime Organisations has said it will launch a series of research centres in developing countries to promote the uptake of low-carbon equipment.
Five Maritime Technology Cooperation Centres (MTCCs) will be funded with a €10 million grant from the European Commission, the International Maritime Organisation announced on 12 January. The move is designed to increase use of energy efficient technologies and operations to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
The MTCCs will provide technical assistance, build scientific capacity and disseminate technical information, the IMO said. The centres’ activities will include setting up voluntary pilot data-collection and reporting systems with shipowners and maritime administrators to inform IMO policies.
