India builds ties with Cern

An agreement signed yesterday will grant India access to the inner sanctum of Cern’s governance and increase opportunities for Indian scientists and companies.

Representatives of Cern and the Indian government signed an agreement granting the country associate member status on 21 November. The agreement will enable India to take part in meetings of Cern’s governing council and committees, make Indian scientists eligible for staff appointments, and allow Indian companies to bid for Cern contracts.

In a statement, Cern director general Fabiola Gianotti said that India has been a strong partner in the organisation’s activities for over 50 years.
