The European Commission is considering the creation of an online platform for the open-access publication of outputs from research it has funded, an EU spokesperson has confirmed.
It emerged at the International Open Science Conference in Berlin on 21 March that the Commission’s head of data and open access, Jean-Claude Burgelman, had said a platform would be launched “soon”. A spokeswoman said that the Commission is thinking of emulating Wellcome Open Research, a platform created last year by the Wellcome Trust, a UK-based medical research charity, to help academics comply with Horizon 2020’s open-access requirement
The trust’s platform was developed by the research services company F1000Research. The company is also developing a similar service to be launched later this year by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which funds global health research.
