Technology advice group launched

The European Commission has set up a group of technology experts to advise it on where to direct relevant research and innovation support.

The High-level Strategy Group on Industrial Technologies was launched on 15 September. A Commission announcement said the group would “give strategic recommendations to the Commission on which industrial technologies to prioritise in European research and innovation in order to strengthen Europe’s innovation capacity and leadership in industrial technologies”.

Jürgen Rüttgers, a German politician, has been appointed chairman of the group. Rüttgers was Germany’s federal minister for education, science, research and technology from 1994 to 1998, and prime minister of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia from 2005 to 2010. The Commission says he has “outstanding expertise in research and innovation policies on the European, national and regional level”.
