€1bn supercomputing plan gets positive reception

Academia and industry have welcomed a European Commission proposal to devote large sums of money to the development of supercomputers.

The Commission held a press conference on 11 January on the high-performance computing initiative that seven EU member states committed to in March 2017. It proposed that €486 million of EU funds be devoted to the EuroHPC initiative by the end of 2020, and that this should be matched by member states and topped up by industry to give a total of about €1bn.

The EU contribution is not new money, but rather money from Horizon 2020 that has already been allocated to computing initiatives. However, the Commission hopes to generate economies of scale by bringing the different funding sources together, and for more countries to join the initiative in future. Thirteen have signed up so far.
