The Spanish and regional Basque governments have paved the way for Spain to become a founding partner in the European Spallation Source, a large research infrastructure being built in Lund, Sweden.
The two governments have approved a modification to an agreement that was needed for Spain to formalise its membership of the ESS European Research Infrastructure Consortium ahead of an April deadline, the Spanish government announced on 29 December.
As agreed in July 2017, Spain will contribute 3 per cent of the ESS’s construction costs, rather than 5 per cent as originally planned. Of this, €42.5 million will come from the Spanish government and €22m from the Basque government. The modification includes provisions for an €18m loan to cover the activities of a Spanish ESS consortium based in Bilbao.
