The EU should support research on applications of nuclear technologies in areas that are unrelated to energy generation, such as medicine, ministers have agreed.
At a meeting on 6 June, ministers in the Council of the EU welcomed work by the European Commission on developing a strategic agenda for medical, industrial and research applications of nuclear and radiation technology.
Ministers called on the Commission to support research in areas such as the diagnostic and therapeutic applications of radiation, improved fuels for the production of medical isotopes, and improved research reactors. They also asked it to develop an action plan for priority areas.
