The French city of Nantes has been named the European Capital of Innovation for 2019, netting it €1 million of Horizon 2020 funding.
The award was presented by the EU research commissioner, Carlos Moedas, at the European Commission’s Research and Innovation Days conference in Brussels on 25 September.
Nantes beat Antwerp in Belgium, Bristol and Glasgow in the UK, Espoo in Finland and Rotterdam in the Netherlands to bag the prize. Each of the runner-up cities received €100,000 to put towards future metropolitan innovation.
