EU battery initiative publishes research and innovation priorities

Securing raw materials, speeding charging and extending battery life identified as goals

The EU’s initiative for bringing together organisations working on battery technology and innovation, Batteries Europe, has published a set of research and innovation priorities, which will help shape the activities of a planned public-private R&D partnership.

Priorities set out by the initiative on 3 July include securing sustainable supplies of raw materials, exploring the potential of advanced materials to increase performance, and recycling materials once batteries have reached the end of their lifespan. Longer-term priorities should include developing novel battery chemistry and cell designs.
