Initial public-private investment of up to €30bn mooted
To be a truly independent player on the world stage, Europe must make its own microchips, according to Thierry Breton, commissioner for the internal market.
Addressing a virtual version of the Hannover Messe trade fair on 15 July, Breton (pictured) said he would “explore the idea of launching a European alliance on microelectronics” with R&D and manufacturing pillars. This could begin with a combined public-private investment of between €20 billion and €30bn, he suggested.
