EU set to continue defence R&D cooperation with Norway

Partnership ‘positively contributes’ to long-term competitiveness of European defence, says Commission

The EU and Norway look set to continue their cooperation on defence R&D, after the European Commission asked EU leaders in the European Council to maintain the partnership for 2020.

Writing to the Council on 17 August, the Commission said Norwegian participation in the EU’s Preparatory Action on Defence Research—a pilot for a fully fledged 2021-27 EU defence R&D programme—“positively contributes” to EU efforts. It proposed a Council decision to facilitate Norwegian participation for 2020, retroactively applicable from January.
