Euratom programme has increased focus on uses of nuclear technologies other than for energy generation

The EU has signed off the 2021-25 iteration of its Euratom nuclear research and training programme, which will devote about €1.4 billion to fusion and fission research and developing nuclear competencies.

Signed off on 12 May, the next iteration of Euratom will devote its biggest funding pot, €583 million, to fusion R&D, including work with the international research consortium Iter, which is building a prototype fusion reactor in southern France (pictured).
