EIC president seeks to ‘stir up entrepreneurship’ in science

Michiel Scheffer outlines his priorities and concerns for Europe as he starts new role

Europe needs more careers for PhD holders and a greater sense of entrepreneurship among scientists to meet its innovation goals, the new and inaugural president of the European Innovation Council board has warned.

The EIC has a €10 billion 2021-27 budget to fund the development of breakthrough technologies and their commercialisation as part of the EU’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme. It launched as a fully fledged funder in 2021, building on various existing instruments, but only got its first full board president on 1 June, after years of having an interim chair.
