EU and Japan partner on research foresight and semiconductors

Political leaders say cooperation also planned on topics including artificial intelligence and quantum

The EU and Japan have agreed to boost their cooperation on semiconductors and research foresight, among other topics—although their range of deals did not include one on the country’s association to the bloc’s research and innovation programme.

In a joint statement issued on 13 July, the European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen, Japan’s prime minister Fumio Kishida and European Council president Charles Michel (pictured left to right) announced that the EU and Japan had signed a memorandum of understanding on semiconductors.
