Companies’ approval to be part of state funding

Researchers applying for state support will now have to convince funders their research has commercial and societal impact along with demonstrating excellence in science, the new head of Science Foundation Ireland has said.

The goal is to ensure that scientific research supported by the taxpayer will have “impact and relevance”, said the foundation’s director general, Mark Ferguson.
