Academics warn of applied research danger

Prominent research academics have called on government to continue funding basic research, warning that failure to do so could undermine their ability to win EU grant support.

In a letter published in The Irish Times on 22 August, 17 researchers across a range of disciplines and institutions described their concerns that state funding was increasingly being directed towards applied rather than basic research.
