Wave energy research project receives €19.8m

Ireland has won research support worth €19.8 million for a wave energy project under the European Commission’s NER300 funding programme.

Announced on 18 December, it was one of 23 projects to receive a combined €1.2 billion for a range of energy demonstration projects. The Irish project is a scale-up of a wave energy system already tested at the European Marine Energy Centre on the Orkney Islands. It will see six wave energy devices attached to the sea floor with the resultant electricity plugged into the national grid.
