University opens research centre for digital study

Dublin City University has launched a National Institute for Digital Learning to conduct studies and create course materials to support online, distance and blended class/remote learning.

Announced on 28 November, the centre will support the professional development of academic staff in digital teaching, develop content including for national school courses in post-primary education and postgraduate degrees at third level and do research into the technology and policy issues associated with digital learning.

Education minister Ruairi Quinn said that Ireland had been “behind the curve” of the digital revolution when announcing the initiative at the university. Investment in digital-learning has increased however and the centre will help development of the sector, he said.
