Involvement in European Space Agency programmes has become an important growth area for Irish companies resulting in rising exports and employment, according to the minister for research.
Sean Sherlock was speaking about the application of space technologies in support of marine services at a conference in Cork on 18 April. More than 40 Irish companies participate in agency programmes, he said.
While the government invested €17 million in agency programmes, company involvement generated significant exports that are expected to top €56m by 2015. Employment by then should stand at about 2,000, showing that the space programme was making an important contribution to Ireland’s economic recovery, he said.
