Jobs minister Richard Bruton has won government approval for legislation that will see Forfás, the state advisory body on research, innovation and enterprise merge with his department.
The integration will create a strategic policy division within the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Bruton said in a statement on 17 April. As such it will strengthen the department’s job creation policy, he added.
This is one of a number of government agency amalgamations introduced by Bruton since he came to office in March 2011. Already the independent chief scientific adviser’s office has been closed and its role has been transferred to the director general of the research funding body Science Foundation Ireland. The National Consumer Agency and the Competition Authority have merged.
