Importance of regions in economic development highlighted at conference

Economic growth is increasingly linked to the ability of regional economies to innovate, Sean Sherlock, Ireland's minister of state for research said in an address to WIRE2013, the Week of Innovative Regions in Europe conference in Cork on 6 June.

The research Commissioner Márie Geoghegan-Quinn said in her address to the conference that the European Union needed to boost research and innovation at regional and national level as a driver for the economic recovery of Europe.

University College Cork hosted the event, which included a mix of companies and research academics.
