Government renews funding for seabed mapping

Ireland’s National Marine Mapping Programme Infomar has received €15 million from the Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources.

The funding, announced on 31 December, will allow Infomar to continue its ongoing work to map Ireland’s 125,000 square kilometres of underwater territory, said the department’s minister Fergus O’Dowd. The mapping programme has been underway for 8 years and has completed detailed surveys along the south-western, southern and eastern coasts of Ireland.

The project is run by the Geological Survey of Ireland and the Marine Institute. Information from the survey supports commercial activities including offshore energy, mapping, navigation and other services.
