The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland has announced a research strategy aimed at improving the translation of basic research into treatments, products and services for clinical use to improve outcomes for patients.
The strategy, announced on 5 November, also calls for the aggressive promotion of knowledge transfer and mechanisms to make it easier for companies to become involved in developing products from the college’s research activity. It is also opening a newly formed Office of Research and Innovation to assist in linking researchers and companies.
Ray Stallings, director of research at the college, said an important aim of the strategy was to increase the research funding drawdown from the EU research budget Horizon 2020. The college’s research institute employs about 400 full-time researchers.
