Queen’s takes on superbug

Queen’s University Belfast has won a €720,000 research grant to study an emerging antibiotic-resistant bacterium Klebsiella that causes about 1,000 deaths a year in the UK.

The three-year project is jointly funded by the UK’s Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council and the Medical Research Council, the university said on 6 March.

Project leader is José Bengoechea from the Centre for Infection and Immunity at Queen’s School of Medicine, Dentistry and Biomedical Sciences.
