The Vision Research Centre at the Waterford Institute of Technology has opened two labs to boost research activity in nutrition and eye health.
The Howard Laboratory will provide analytical chemistry expertise while the Darwin Laboratory will focus on biotechnology, the institute said in a statement. The labs, opened on 20 February, were built with support from charitable trust the Howard Foundation in the UK and Nutrasight Consultancy Ltd in Waterford.
The €4m centre is led by John Nolan who has received a €1.5m European Research Council award. The centre looks at ways to treat macular degeneration based on dietary nutrients, particularly lutein.
