Waterford Institute of Technology researcher Conor Fell has received support from the Irish Research Council to carry out a study of community and voluntary work in Ireland.
The two-year study, announced on 8 April, will look at the metrics used to assess the impact of investment in the third sector. Fell will work with local voluntary organisation U-Casadh, an organisation that helps ex-prisoners to integrate into society.
The charities and not-for-profit organisations spend about €2.5bn a year and employ 63,000 full-time staff, said a statement from the institute. An assessment of impact has become important because of pressure on resources, it said.
