Minister beefs-up powers of data protection watchdog

The Office of the Data Protection Commissioner is being strengthened with a budget increase of €2.8 million during 2017.

The increase, announced on 11 October, marks a fourfold rise in funding for the organisation since 2014. Its budget now stands at €7.5m.

The move demonstrates the importance that the government places on data protection, said data protection junior minister Dara Murphy.
