Research libraries aim for central digital catalogue

The Consortium of National and University Libraries has launched a strategy to increase researchers’ access to digital collections across Ireland and foster more international collaboration.

Released on 22 November, Ireland’s Memory, Ireland’s Discovery 2016-2019 proposes a shared national online catalogue of resources including all the main research libraries on the island of Ireland. The aim is to make the catalogue fully searchable by both academics and the general public within two years.

There are 3.5 million digital items in the collections of the consortium’s libraries, with 20 million searches recorded each year, said Christopher Pressler, a board member of the consortium. Libraries remain at the heart of research and education, he said.
