Lecturers protest over ‘reckless’ universities plan

Institutes of Technology lecturers will ballot for industrial action later this month in protest over a plan to convert the institutes into technological universities.

The Teachers Union of Ireland, which represents 4,000 lecturers and researchers in the institutes, have already staged a protest outside the Dail on 26 January.

It says the Technological Universities bill that would see the amalgamation of the 13 institutes into a number of universities on a regional basis is proceeding through the Dail “with reckless haste”.
