Widespread welcome for increased uptake of sciences

The rise in student interest in the sciences and mathematics has been widely welcomed by companies and science groups following the results of Ireland’s school-leavers’ examinations.

More than 55,000 students sat national Leaving Certificate examinations in Ireland June and the results were published on 17 August.

The Central Applications Office made its initial third-level course offers on 22 August and the first round of offers closed on 29 August. The offers continued to show growing interest in STEM subjects with a particularly sharp rise in students seeking architecture, engineering and business courses. These are all areas where the economy has shown signs of recovery.
