Postgrads get €2.5m to gain workplace experience

The Irish Research Council has invested €2.5 million in 33 research projects under its Employment-Based Programme, which enables students to pursue postgraduate degrees while on work placements in companies and other organisations.

The council announced details of this year’s awards on 21 August. The programme supports researchers who are working on PhDs or masters degrees and helps them to gain workplace experience and expertise while they carry out their research, the council said in a statement.

Beneficiaries graduate with a degree but will also have acquired work experience and the potential for future employment in the host companies. The participating firms gain the services of a highly trained researcher whose work is directly relevant to the company, the council said.
