Further reductions in Irish animal testing cannot come soon enough, say activists

The number of animals used in research in Ireland has halved since a European directive urging reductions came into force in 2013, according to the Health Products Regulatory Authority.

In 2020, a total of 137,988 animals were used in procedures for research and testing, about half of the 277,559 used in 2013. The HPRA is the Irish state agency responsible for implementing EU legislation regarding animal research, and for authorising animal experiments.
