Role that shapes policy created after criticism of Science Foundation Ireland’s influence

The Irish government has approved the appointment of an independent science adviser to provide expert consultation on issues that concern science policy.

Between 2012 and 2021, the role of science adviser had been coupled with the position of director-general of Science Foundation Ireland (SFI), Ireland’s main research-funding body. However, this situation drew criticism from members of the academic community, who expressed concerns that the dual role created a conflict of interest.
