Education minister backs shipping container project

Public-private partnership expected to modernise Ireland’s ports and cargo links

Norma Foley, the Irish minister for education, has launched a four-year research partnership to improve container crane technology—in a move to modernise the country’s ports.

The partnership includes Science Foundation Ireland’s Research Centre for Software, Munster Technological University and container cranes company Liebherr Container Cranes. It will focus on the development of so-called smart cranes, which can move shipping containers faster than conventionally operated cranes.
