Country lags behind in EU funding as ageing academic community struggles to renew

Italian R&D investment has increased from 1 per cent of gross domestic product in 2000 to 1.4 per cent in 2016, leaving the country near the bottom of European rankings.

However, recent years have shown some improvement in the speed with which this spending accelerates, according to the country’s 2019 report on research and innovation, presented at the National Research Council (CNR) in Rome on 15 October.
