Italian prosecutors have asked the Milanese courts to drop a misconduct case against cancer researchers after following up allegations involving deliberate image manipulation, according to documents seen by Research Professional News.

Alberto Mantovani from Milan’s Humanitas University, and Pier Giuseppe Pelicci and Pier Paolo di Fiore of the Università di Milano, were among seven cancer researchers at the centre of a criminal investigation that started in 2016.

According to Milan prosecutors Francesco Cajani and Paolo Nicola Filippini, several papers co-authored between 2000 and 2013 by one or more of the researchers under investigation contained image manipulation or duplication, which was revealed using specialist software.
